Immersion learning is surprisingly simple — just watch lots of content you enjoy and try to understand it. You'll keep improving naturally. Here's how to use zeroStudy:

  1. Install the extension and watch videos on YouTube or Netflix, marking any words you want to remember
  2. Use the Reinforce system to review, accelerating the learning process. (Even without active review, you'll gradually pick up words through immersion alone — I learned English and Japanese without it — but using it can boost retention by up to 200%)

zeroStudy supports Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, French, German, and any other language with subtitles available.

Creating an Immersion Environment at Home

If your goal is to strengthen "implicit knowledge," then the only way is to immerse yourself massively in a language and "understand" the linguistic messages.

This is very similar to how children learn their native language. As long as explicit knowledge doesn't get in the way, your brain's neural circuits will naturally start building connections.

Practical Steps

If you're just getting started and don't know where to find content, follow these steps:

1. Create a Dedicated YouTube Account

Many people ask: "How do I find good content to watch?"

YouTube's algorithm is your best friend. If you use your regular account, your homepage will be full of content in your native language.

The simplest solution: Create a brand new YouTube account and only use it to watch content in your target language. This way, YouTube will think you're from that country and continuously recommend local content to you.

2. Search for "Comprehensible Input"

For beginners, search for these two keywords:

  • Comprehensible Input
  • TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling)

For example:

  • Learning Korean: Search TPRS Korean or Comprehensible Input Korean
  • Learning Japanese: Search TPRS Japanese or Comprehensible Input Japanese

Comprehensible Input: Content where you can understand the general meaning (you don't need to understand every word, but at least know what's happening).

3. Avoid "Teaching Videos"

Important: Don't use teaching videos as immersion material.

Language explanation videos (like explaining English grammar in your native language) teach you "explicit knowledge." This is the opposite of immersion.

  • ❌ Explaining the target language in your native language: Completely useless, only adds to explicit knowledge
  • ⚠️ Explaining the target language in the target language: Counts as immersion, but usually still explains rules, which can trigger "logical analysis mode"
  • ✅ TPRS / Cartoons / Real content: This is the best. It lets you experience the language directly like a child.

Memory Reinforcement System

This is completely optional. Don't feel pressured — just watching content you enjoy and accumulating immersion hours is already effective!

If you want to significantly accelerate your vocabulary growth, zeroStudy has a built-in Spaced Repetition System (SRS). Unlike traditional flashcard apps, you review words from videos you've actually watched, with the original sentence and context — making them far easier to remember. zeroStudy also has a mobile app — review on the subway or bus whenever you have a free moment.

Use the zeroStudy Discord community to ask if others have recommended content lists.
